Eminem And Lil Wayne Rock ‘Saturday Night Live’

Eminem and Lil Wayne sent “Saturday Night Live” viewers into the holiday season with a double dose of hip-hop over the weekend.

The rap luminaries first rocked Em’s steely Haddaway-sampling joint “No Love,” backed by a live band on a set decked out with festive holiday decorations. Both MCs kept their style casually cool: Wayne rocked a white T-shirt and black plants while Em sported a brown jacket and gray beanie. Weezy spit the first verse with his signature unhinged energy, asserting his return to the live-television circuit. Em helmed the rest of the song, nimbly dropping his lyrics with abandon.

The MCs split up for the final performance, with Eminem kicking things off with the Pink-assisted cut “Won’t Back Down.” Outfitted in a black jacket and cap, Em rocked the joint with the help of a hype man, spitting bars like, “How you douche bags feel?/ Knowing you’re disposable, Summer’s Eve, Massengill.” When Em wrapped up, the Detroit MC ceded the mic to Weezy, who hopped up onstage solo for the recently released “6’7″.” The live electric guitar-laced version was a super-charged departure from the Bangladesh-crafted banger, with Wayne knocking out the lyrics with his high-powered flow and vibing with a slew of similarly amped musicians.

The “SNL” appearance is the latest team-up in a long list collaborations between the Shady boss and the Young Money captain. Em guested on Weezy’s “Drop the World” from the New Orleans vet’s rock-centric album “Rebirth.” Wayne returned the favor for Em’s Recovery cut “No Love.”

Other hitmakers also popped up on Saturday night’s broadcast, which was hosted by “Tron Legacy” star Jeff Bridges. Akon helped Lonely Planet bust out an ode to gettin’ it on, belting “I just had sex!” Blake Lively and Jessica Alba made cameos as comely conquests as the crew gamely sang, “I’ll never go back to the not-having-sex ways of the past.”

On “The Miley Cyrus Show” skit, featured player Vanessa Bayer played a giggly, hyper version of the teen starlet, and poked fun at the “Can’t Be Tamed” singer’s much-publicized salvia bong hit. Bayer’s Cyrus explained her “five-minute drug problem,” saying, “so, what happened was, I got really high — like really high.”

Veteran actor Bridges also showed off his acting chops in several skits, playing an effeminate cowboy who doles out gussied-up Christmas presents, and starring in his own prank show “Jeff’d,” in which he messes with celebrity pals like Billy Bob Thornton and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Wayne associate DJ Scoob Doo described the vibe of the night MTV News.

“The energy in the building is historical and it’s extra special to see everybody fight for position backstage to see Lil Wayne take over SNL,” he said.

Dipset Affiliate Noe Launches New Label Merlot Ent.; Planning New Album

Dipset/Byrd Gang member NOE recently launched Merlot Heights Entertainment and is planning to introduce a new crop of Baltimore rap artists to the Hip-Hop game. NOE, who has been featured on several high profile Dip related projects, including Jim Jones’ Pray IV Reign and MOB – The Byrdgang Album, has also worked with major artists like Sean “Diddy” Combs, Ludacris and Busta Rhymes. “This is a monumental happening for not only my business portfolio, but for the Hip-Hop community of Baltimore City as a whole,” NOE told AllHipHop.com. While Merlot Heights Entertainment has secured major distribution, NOE opted to keep the details under wraps, until the “ink dries.” He thanked Byrdgang leader Jim Jones teaching him the ins and outs of the music business. “I give a lot of credit to Capo (Jim Jones). He threw me in the mix and basically gave me the platform I needed,” NOE told AllHipHop.com. “He had to believe in me to a large extent in order to place his name and reputation on the line. He taught me to how to fish. This game is tricky. You can blink and you’re done.” NOE’S album NOE Heat, NOE Hot Water, is slated to hit stores in mid-2011.

Oppose The Performance Tax
There is an issue facing the members of Congress, and the Senate. While the Performance Right’s bills being considered are portrayed as something that will provide fair compensation to performers, in reality an act that would result in millions of dollars, and the majority of these fees, ending up places like Tokyo, London, and Hollywood, not the hands of performers. This will be money which local radio stations could have used to impact and invest in their local economy and community.

What is a performance tax?
A performance tax is a fee that record labels want the government to impose on local radio stations simply for airing music free of charge for listeners.

In recent years, the record labels have seen sales of albums decline as more listeners opt for digital downloads. However, radio remains the number one promotional vehicle for music – it’s not responsible for the label’s resistance to the digital age, and it shouldn’t be on the hook to fix it. Radio already provides between $1.5 to $2.4 billion dollars annually in music sales for artists and record labels. By pushing a tax on local radio, record labels are biting the hand that feeds them.

Where does the money go?
In short, the money would flow out of your community and into the pockets of the record labels – the great majority of which are foreign-owned. The record labels would like for you to think this is all about compensating the artists, but in truth the record labels would get at least 50% of the proceeds from a tax on local radio.

How does this affect me?
If you’re one of the 235 million people who listen to radio each week, a tax could reduce the variety of music radio stations play, and all but eliminate the possibility of new artists breaking onto the scene. The tax could particularly affect smaller, minority-owned stations, some of which may have to switch to a talk-only format or shut down entirely.

It also affects your community. Radio stations are major contributors to public service – generating $6 billion in public service annually and providing vital news and community information and free airtime to help local charities. If a tax were imposed, stations’ critical public and community service efforts could be reduced.

And worst of all, if you’re one of the 106,000 Americans employed by local radio your job could be in jeopardy. In these troubling economic times, the last thing local radio needs is to be hit with a tax that some analysts estimate could be $2-7 billion annually.

Doesn’t radio already pay for music?
Radio compensates composers and songwriters to the tune of about $550 million annually. It’s widely understood that songwriters do not have the same name recognition to financially exploit themselves to make money. Performers can make money from touring and personal appearances, merchandise and other licensing and branding opportunities like perfume and clothing lines.

Radio stations also pay a royalty for streaming music over the internet, for reasons that include concerns that a perfect digital copy of the music could be captured by the end user.

Congress has continually recognized that local radio is different and should not be subject to such a fee. Local radio is free, so everyone, regardless of income, can have access to it. Local radio also has to fulfill certain “public service obligations” that other platforms do not. And importantly, the free music that radio plays provides free promotion to the record labels and artists – between $1.5 to $2.4 billion annually.

How can I get involved?
There are currently two bills pending in Congress that would levy a performance tax on local radio – H.R. 848, sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (MI-14) and S. 379, sponsored by Sen. Patrick Leahy (VT). Your members of Congress need to hear that you strongly oppose these bills.

Additionally, anti-performance tax resolutions have been introduced in the House and Senate in support of local radio. In the Senate, Sens. Blanche Lincoln (AR) and John Barrasso (WY) introduced S. Con. Res. 14, and in the House, Reps. Gene Green (TX-29) and Mike Conaway (TX-11) introduced H. Con. Res. 49. Both are known as the “Local Radio Freedom Act.” Encourage your senators and representative to cosponsor these resolutions.
